Crafting a Cure: Digital Medicine for Oncology

Digital Medicine to revolutionize cancer treatment

Proteus Discover is comprised of ingestible sensors, a small wearable sensor patch, an application on a mobile device and a provider portal. Proteus Discover unlocks insight into patient health patterns and medication treatment effectiveness, leading to more informed healthcare decisions.

CHALLENGE

Oral oncolytics are a fast-growing treatment option for many forms of cancer. They offer numerous benefits to patients, but come with an increased need for close monitoring by healthcare teams.

SOLUTION

Proteus needed a shot in the arm to boost existing design and development teams as they explored a new use case, with an ambitious product roadmap. As Lead Designer, I helped define the MVP and future vision for a patient application and provider portal specific to oncology.

"What are the core needs and opportunities in Oncology?"

DISCOVERY & IDEATION

The Oncology use case was filled with ambiguity, and we had to quickly learn to be comfortable with uncertainty in scope. Storyboards and early concepts helped steer discovery conversations with speciality pharmacies, hospitals and patients.

I created Ad Hoc personas based off this research, allowing us to explore and prioritize roadmap features that would have the most impact for our target users.

Following additional research, we involved the scrum team and key stakeholders in substantiated persona creation.

"HMW provide an engaging patient experience within MVP features?"

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Lucky for us, a breadth of literature already exists on adherence, motivation and engagement. Leveraging psychological theory, medical studies and HCI best practices, I mapped out core design principles to define the patient app experience.

"How can we build an MVP based on currently functionality, while considering the future product vision?"

USER FLOWS, AXIS & MODELS

Together with product, I led requirements gathering and documentation for key features; prioritizing according to feasibility and impact. Spectrum axis and conceptual models allowed us to document and explore numerous ideas quickly; aligning core team members on MVP and future goals. User flows and low-fi comps got us through sprint release planning while these features were still being defined.

“We need to augment our internal team so that we can hit our sprint deadlines and not lose sight of the product vision.”

DESIGN SPRINTS

I worked side-by-side with the internal designers, engineers and PMs to deliver speced and user validated designs, ready for production.

“What should our product look like in two years?

VISUAL IDENTITY

Beyond the MVP, we explored a new visual identity that would provide a calm, supportive and reputable experience to Oncology patients and providers.

“We need to convey our vision to leadership, partners and investors.”

PRODUCT VISION

We set a vision for the product, exploring how Proteus could further drive patient outcomes with symptom tracking, machine learning and patient-support features. Scenarios helped illustrate the interactions in digestable, concrete flows.
